Fringe SOS Candidate Marchant Continues to Lie, Promote Dangerous Conspiracy Theories about Nevada’s Elections

Nevada’s most prominent election denier Jim Marchant is continuing to lie and spread dangerous conspiracy theories about Nevada’s elections going back twenty years. New reporting sheds more light on the stakes of Nevada’s Secretary of State race with Marchant running as the GOP nominee . 

To recap his long history of election denialism, Marchant — who is running to oversee Nevada’s elections — has:

• Spewed disinformation asserting legitimate elections were stolen,
• Said an imaginary Q Anon figure summoned him to run for office, 
• Led the 2020 fake elector scheme to subvert the will of Nevada voters,
• “Not really” trusted the results of his own primary.

Key points:

• In Nevada, Jim Marchant, who is best known for standing alongside a group of Republicans who signed fake electoral certificates claiming Trump won the 2020 election in Nevada, won his primary in June. He has repeatedly undermined the results of the 2020 election, including in an interview with NBC News in 2022 in which he said, “it’s almost statistically impossible that Joe Biden won.”

• It’s Marchant’s second run for secretary of state and his second time facing Cisco Aguilar, the incumbent. Marchant made his first run for the position as the president of the America First Secretary of State Coalition, a group of election deniers who ran for top election roles in 2022. His campaign site this year states that he wants voters to submit proof of citizenship to register and cast ballots, wants results to be hand-counted, and wants universal mail-in voting to end. It also claims that Marchant was “a victim of election fraud” in 2020 when he unsuccessfully ran for Congress.

Nevada Independent: Unproven claims of widespread voter fraud return in Nevada secretary of state’s race

Key points:

• In a 30-minute interview with The Indy this month, Marchant echoed numerous unproven claims of election fraud.

• As apparent evidence of his distrust in voting machines, Marchant claimed that the Venezuelan government used the Smartmatic voting machines to affect “elections in 72 countries,” a claim that CIA analysis from this summer rebutted. 

• He also said he has not trusted any Nevada election results — including ones he has won — since the entire state started using touch-screen voting machines in the mid-2000s. 

• “Using these machines is set up for chaos and unorganization and just nobody knowing what’s going on because they can hide stuff that way,” he said.

• Nevada’s voting machines go through a rigorous security process, including accuracy and logic testing before and after elections and security testing to ensure nobody has gained unauthorized access. There is no evidence that voting machines have led to inaccurate results.
