Secretary of State Certifies Candidates and Measures for November General Election

OLYMPIA — Today, the Office of the Secretary of State certified statewide results for the Aug. 4 Primary. Along with certification of results, the Secretary of State also certified all measures and candidates that will appear on the ballot in November.

According to vote totals certified by Chief of Staff Amanda Doyle, more than 1.8 million voters participated in the primary, representing approximately 36.77% of Washington’s 5.1 million eligible voters.

“With primary results certified, dedicated election officials across the state are now hard at work preparing for another safe, secure, and accessible election this November,” Doyle said. “Every voter has the opportunity to cast a ballot and make their mark on Washington in the upcoming general election.”

A manual recount will be conducted for the state senator contest in Legislative District 42, in which the second- and third-place vote getters are separated by a margin of four votes. More information about recounts is available on the Recount FAQ webpage

In addition to finalizing which candidates will advance to the November general election, certification also determines the order in which candidates will appear on the ballot. For positions that appeared in the primary, the candidate with the most votes will be listed first on the general election ballot, followed by the candidate with the second most votes. If the position did not appear in the primary, candidates will appear according to the order determined by lot draw.

Voters will also decide three statewide measures in the general election. IP26-645, an initiative concerning state and local taxes, completed signature verification in July and is now certified to the ballot.

Two initiatives to the legislature that were not acted on during the previous legislative session will also be placed on the ballot: IL26-001, concerning parental rights relating to their children in public school, and IL26-638, concerning participation in athletics at K-12 schools.

Ballots for the Nov. 4 General Election will be mailed to voters by Oct. 16. Washingtonians still have time to register to vote or update their registration. Online and mail-in registrations must be received by Oct. 26. Voters can register online at VoteWA.gov or download and print a registration form at sos.wa.gov/elections. Voters can also register or update their information in person at county elections offices until 8 p.m. on Election Day.
