Merz Dismisses Snap Election Talk, Backs Coalition Stability

(MENAFN) As stated by reports, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has ruled out the possibility of snap elections or running a minority government, pushing back against growing speculation over the stability of his coalition.

Speaking at a business event in Berlin, Merz reaffirmed his commitment to the governing alliance between his Christian Democrats (CDU/CSU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD), despite declining polling figures.

“I’m saying this very clearly and unequivocally: a minority government is not an option for me. I will not enter into one, and I will not bring one about,” Merz said, according to a German news agency.

He also dismissed calls for early elections, warning that an extended campaign period could worsen economic uncertainty in Germany, Europe’s largest economy.

“Does anyone seriously believe that a country in the midst of an election campaign and such an economic crisis can make the necessary decisions we need right now?” he said.

Merz added that he intends to keep the current coalition intact through the full legislative term in order to ensure political and economic stability.

According to an INSA poll published on Sunday, his approval ratings have declined roughly a year after he assumed office on May 6, 2025.
