Bulgaria Sets Date for Snap Election
The announcement came moments after prime minister-designate Andrey Gurov presented his proposed cabinet lineup to Iotova at a nationally televised meeting broadcast live to the public.
"I will issue a decree appointing your official cabinet and await your oath before the National Assembly, as well as issue a decree to hold parliamentary elections on April 19, 2026," Iotova told Gurov.
The president stressed that the incoming caretaker administration faces a clear mandate. "The most important task is the preparation of fair parliamentary elections according to the laws of the country," Iotova said.
Beyond the elections, Iotova outlined a broader set of urgent priorities for the transitional government, including managing vulnerabilities in the country's energy infrastructure, curbing the impact of soaring commodity prices, and safeguarding Bulgaria's standing within the European Union.
The political vacuum traces back to December 2025, when the coalition government of Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov collapsed following its resignation. Subsequent attempts by parliamentary factions to form a new ruling majority failed, triggering the constitutional mechanism requiring the president to appoint a caretaker cabinet and call fresh elections within two months.
Iotova tapped Gurov last week as caretaker prime minister-designate. The 50-year-old currently holds the position of deputy governor at the Bulgarian National Bank. His background spans public service and academia — he previously served as a member of parliament and as an associate professor at the American University in Bulgaria, where his expertise covered corporate finance, risk management, company valuation, and investment management.
