Peru's Congress Votes to Strip President from Power
The motions passed decisively, with 75 votes in favor, 24 against, and three abstentions — clearing the threshold required to force Jeri from office without delay.
Following the announcement of the results, acting Congress President Fernando Rospigliosi declared the congressional presidency vacant. He confirmed that lawmakers will gather for a plenary session at 6 p.m. local time Wednesday to elect a new head of Congress — a consequential vote, as the chosen successor will automatically assume the nation's presidency.
Jeri had served as Peru's president since October 10, 2025, when he was sworn in following the congressional removal of his predecessor, former President Dina Boluarte.
Peru's constitution lays out a clear line of succession in the event a sitting president is unable to serve: the first vice president assumes office, followed by the second vice president if the first is also unavailable. Should both vice presidential posts be vacant, the president of Congress steps into the role. In cases of permanent incapacity, the congressional president is constitutionally required to call fresh elections immediately.
The latest upheaval marks yet another chapter in Peru's prolonged political instability, as the country braces for its third leadership transition in just months.
