Zelensky Calls for Proper Security Measures for Upcoming Ukrainian Vote
Speaking to journalists, Zelenskyy addressed a Financial Times report suggesting he plans to announce, on Feb. 24, a presidential vote and a referendum on a potential peace deal with Russia.
“This is the first time I hear about it. The first time I heard it, probably, from the Financial Times. Now this is the second time I hear it from you,” Zelenskyy said regarding the report, which cited “Ukrainian and European officials involved in the planning.”
“Secondly, I have said many times about the elections, we come to the elections when there are all the appropriate security guarantees,” he added.
The report indicated that the US administration of President Donald Trump has urged Ukraine to hold both votes by May 15 or risk losing Washington’s proposed security guarantees.
Zelenskyy clarified that while the topic of elections has been raised by some international partners, Ukraine itself has never initiated the issue. He also stated that the country is ready to hold elections, but a ceasefire is necessary to ensure voter safety, emphasizing that the matter is fundamentally a “security issue.”
