Trump Calls for Federal Involvement in Elections

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump on Tuesday urged the federal government to take a more active role in overseeing elections, arguing that state-level processes have failed to ensure integrity.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said, "I want to see elections be honest," when asked to clarify his earlier comments about “nationalizing” elections. He added, "A state is an agent for the federal government in elections. I don't know why the federal government doesn't do 'em anyway."

The remarks follow a statement on Monday in which Trump encouraged Republicans to “take over” voting in at least 15 unspecified locations, framing the action as necessary to address what he described as corrupt election practices at the state level.

Highlighting specific examples, Trump said, "Take a look at Detroit. Take a look at Pennsylvania. Take a look at Philadelphia. You go take a look at Atlanta. Look at some of the places that horrible corruption on elections (takes place), and the federal government should not allow that. The federal government should get involved."

He further argued that states act as "agents of the federal government to count the votes," and if they are unable to conduct vote counts "legally and honestly, then somebody else should take over."

The proposal has prompted criticism from Democrats and comes as the US approaches the midterm elections scheduled for November.
