Schumer Condemns Trump’s Call to “Nationalize” Elections
Speaking on the Senate floor, Schumer said, "Just a few hours ago, Donald Trump said he wants to 'nationalize' elections around the country. That's what Trump said. You think he believes in democracy?"
Trump’s remarks came after he called for Republicans to “take over” voting in at least 15 unspecified locations, describing the effort as a form of “nationalization” intended to address what he alleged were corrupt state election processes.
Schumer argued that the proposal is unlawful, asking rhetorically, "Does Donald Trump need a copy of the Constitution? What he's saying is outlandishly illegal."
He also pointed to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, a Republican-backed bill aimed at tightening voter eligibility and registration rules, as a potential mechanism for the so-called nationalization of elections. "I want to be very clear: the SAVE Act is dead on arrival in the Senate, and every single Senate Democrat will vote against any bill that contains it," Schumer said.
The 2026 midterm elections, scheduled for Nov. 3, will determine control of all 435 House seats and 33 Senate seats.
