Schumer Slams Trump Push to “Nationalize” Elections before Midterms

(MENAFN) US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer sharply criticized President Donald Trump on Monday over recent remarks urging Republicans to “nationalize” elections ahead of the upcoming midterm vote, calling the idea fundamentally unlawful and a threat to democratic norms.

Speaking on the Senate floor, Schumer reacted to Trump’s comments by questioning his commitment to democracy. "Just a few hours ago, Donald Trump said he wants to 'nationalize' elections around the country. That's what Trump said. You think he believes in democracy?" he said.

Schumer’s remarks followed statements in which Trump encouraged Republicans to “take over” voting operations in at least 15 unnamed locations, portraying the proposal as a form of “nationalization” aimed at addressing what he alleged were corrupt election systems at the state level.

Challenging the legality of the proposal, Schumer added: "Does Donald Trump need a copy of the Constitution? What he's saying is outlandishly illegal."

He went on to argue that one legislative mechanism being used to advance this agenda is the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, a Republican-supported measure that seeks to tighten voter registration rules and eligibility standards.

Schumer made clear that the proposal would face unified resistance from Democrats in the upper chamber. "I want to be very clear: the SAVE Act is dead on arrival in the Senate, and every single Senate Democrat will vote against any bill that contains it," he said.

The next US midterm elections are scheduled for November 3, 2026, with voters set to decide the makeup of all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 33 seats in the Senate.
