Election of Dutch Democrats, PVV end in tie
With 98.6% of votes counted and a turnout of 78.4%, both parties garnered 16.7% of the ballots. Projections indicate that each will claim 26 seats in the 150-seat House of Representatives, reports say.
Geert Wilders, known for his anti-Islam stance, had previously led PVV to an unexpected win in 2023. He withdrew from the ruling coalition last June after his partners rejected his ambitious immigration crackdown, prompting the early election. His ten-point plan included measures such as rejecting all asylum seekers, closing shelters, suspending family reunifications, and deploying the military to patrol the borders.
Following exit polls that suggested a narrow advantage for D66, Wilders expressed disappointment: he had hoped “for a different outcome” and pledged to “fight more than ever.”
